This week, in our This is The End episode, amidst talking about Michael Cera blowing coke in Mcluvin’s face, house parties and what comedic actor they’d let die in an apocalypse, Eric told two stories: one about how Yelawolf threatened to punch us in the face over questions we asked him, and another about how he and I were grabbed up at a club by some fairly well-known dudes — and we responded by…doing nothing. This must’ve been in 2009. Sheek called us ass for not fighting, Styles said he would’ve turned the place upside down. Me being an alleged serial killer and “not dealing with my wounds,” I said none of it mattered and who cared, and Eric stopped me short and said, “It huUuUurt.”
It huUuUuurRrt. Kiss fell out of his chair, Styles threatened to get our lick back and Louch pulled out his therapist cardigan. The episode was put out with names removed, which led to a bunch of people in the comments asking for the full story.
Well: next week, we’ll be putting out the unredacted clip — no bleeps, no bloops — on the paid tier of our newsletter. If we’re gonna start crying on the showcast, might as well get a couple dollars for it! You can upgrade your subscription here.
Every day, across all platforms, we get dozens of suggestions for movies they think we should watch on the showcast — which can be overwhelming. Some are universally beloved, some are more divisive, some shouldn’t even stream on Tubi, most I haven’t heard of — and honestly, I think that we could make a good episode out of anything, so all are welcome. (We’ve been getting a few vocal people asking for Spice World, for whatever reason. And maybe it’d be great! I’ve never seen it.)
Last year, I set up a Google doc, to at least get a handle on what was coming in. Admittedly, it has been more helpful to me than anyone else — Sheek, Eric and Styles are confident about what they want to do. I have a general feeling but I like to check the temperature of the suggestion box, and…well, with Kiss, it’s like spinning a globe and letting your finger land on a country or the ocean or whatever.
But this week, Jada asked to see what people had sent in! I gave him about 50 choices — The Five Heartbeats, Howard the Duck, Snatch, Rumble in the Bronx, Spice World and Big Lebowski were all on there. Eventually he winnowed it down to Hardball, City of God and Harlem Nights…and decided to go with:
Harlem Nights! The Eddie Murphy-written, Eddie Murphy-directed, Eddie Murphy-produced vehicle which allowed him the opportunity to work with his heroes Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor, Della Reese and contemporaries like Robin Harris and Jasmine Guy. A very Black film for Black history month. You can watch the movie on Tubi or Pluto (for free), or you could sign up for Paramount Plus. They probably have a free trial you can use, if you give them a fake email address or whatever. It’s probably on Amazon or something as well.
So, shouts to L Brothers, Shalane and Dreka for suggesting Harlem Nights!
My pick is next and — because it’s been asked for so much, because it’s BHM, because I thought it’d make for a great episode and because I felt like the guys would never do it themselves — I chose Hype Williams’ tour-de-force Belly. So that comes out Feb. 16. (That was suggested by Kerry, Imani, Jonathan, Connz, Suga and Zim, as well as by a bunch of people on other platforms.) We recorded both of those episodes last night, and I feel like the Belly one especially is such a good convo.
For Feb. 23, to close out the month, Styles chose Django Unchained! Another heater, and I’m sure that’ll be an incredible episode.
We like to make this like a book club, so make sure to watch the movies before we do the episodes for maximum impact! Hopefully us announcing the slate of films like this allows you to do that.
Today, Eric and I set it up for 2J3BD to guest on Angie Martinez’s show. The LOX were all impressed that we made it happen, but I can’t imagine they’re as excited as me and my brother. Like, sure, we’ve done a lot of unexpected and cool things in our lives, with this showcast being maybe the most unexpected and coolest.
But, like, speaking for myself, hearing Angie on the radio every day got me through my formative years. Every afternoon during drive time she and DJ Enuff would run down the Hot 5 at 4, and then on Friday nights, we’d listen to her, Jazzy Joyce and Cocoa Chanelle for Ladies Night (before she turned it into a song). She was there for bus rides, car rides, play dates, regular dates, pizza runs, school days, the dark months after Tupac died and then again when Biggie died, from when I was 5’5 to 6’1. She was there for all of it, and now we get to be on air with her and The LOX, in what I’m sure will feel extremely hallucinatory to my middle-school self. Anyway, I’ll put the link in here when the clips come out!
On the paid tier of our newsletter, we put out our first editions of our interview series with Bun B and Tony Moxberg — with Taylor Rooks next! Taylor is (I think!) the most sought-after sports journalist these days, and it was dope to catch up with her to talk about another passion of hers: films. We talk about her favorite movie — Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind — and why it’s a great date movie! Also where the best place she’s ever watched a movie is, which is honestly so sick. (Also she puts me onto a good snack tip.) That’ll be coming out on Monday.
Thanks for reading. As always, you can find us on YouTube, Spotify, Apple, Instagram, TikTok and right here, for our weekly newsletter. Also, here’s our merch shop! Feel free to suggest movies for us to review here!
And have a good week, we could all use more good weeks.
