On Thursday, April 16th, 2J3BD makes its grand return to the mean streets of Gowanus/Park Slope to conquer the stage at Brooklyn’s Bell House. Just a couple months ago, we reviewed Die Hard, re-enacted the scene at Sal’s in Do The Right Thing and Styles threw out a bucket-load of weed to the audience and later karate krashed out on a random dude who was invested in the story. How will things proceed this time?!?!
Tickets go live on Monday to the general public, but readers of this newsletter (ROTN) can get that precious pre-sale link right here (PASSWORD: karate). You’ve got four days to beat those suckers to the punch, get your front row tickets now!
Here’s the schedule for our upcoming movies:
This Monday: Django Unchained (Styles) — Hulu or Paramount+
March 2: All The President’s Men (Eric) feat. Pablo Torre — free on Pluto.
March 9: Cape Fear (Sheek) — on Amazon Prime or free on YouTube with ads.
March 16: Teen Wolf (Jadakiss) — on Amazon Prime or free on YouTube with ads.
We recorded Django and All The President’s Men last night — a classic double-header — where we tackled topics big and small: racial relations! The state of the world! Whether or not making Sheek watch All The President’s Men is supposed to feel like homework! At the end of the night, Johan said, “That was really great. My favorite episodes are the ones where there’s disagreement.”
Also, shouts to everyone who tuned into our Belly episode so far! It usually takes us 7 days to get to 17,000 plays on YouTube — this episode did 20k in 2 days. (Shouts to everyone who suggested we watch it, from the Google doc.) (Also shouts to me for checking the temperature from the Google doc and picking the movie.)
Part of the success was that we had an all-time record high amount of people in the comments for the live premiere (10am, Mondays): 622! Way higher than the 456 for Apocalypto.
I loved hearing the guys talk about The Tunnel, that was really meaningful to me — I was far too young, too far away, too food to go to the legendary nightclub, so I’d just listen to Flex’s live broadcasts and mixtapes. (RIP Big Kap.)
Also, I really really loved the new jingle and animation Mayo, Eric and I put together at the top of the episode. “Today, we had…edddddieeeessss!” was stuck in my head all day.
On the paid side of the newsletter, I interviewed Taylor Rooks — your favorite athlete’s favorite reporter. She talked Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and how she considers it a sci-fi movie, and also gave her top movie snack. But here’s one of my favorite parts:
Where’s the best place you’ve watched a movie?
For my now-husband’s birthday, last year, I basically got a warehouse rented out and we essentially did a drive-thru movie there. So there was like, a blow-up screen. He loves The Avengers, so we watched that. And that was a really fun way to watch a movie.
What kind of car did you drive?
I can’t remember what kind of Ferrari but it was a two-seater. It’s not a car that I have, it was just part of the gift. (laughs) We rented it. It was a convertible. The sound was really great.
Which just seems like a dope gift, to me! A lot of thought and effort put into the experience. On Monday, I’ll be putting out our Lenny S. interview, which I’m really looking forward to.
One of my favorite developments as of late is how Jadakiss will get on a plane and immediately (!) text Eric for movie recommendations. (It’d be helpful if Eric was also on the plane, so he could see what Delta has to offer.) And so Eric thinks of movies off the top of his head that Kiss 1) maybe wouldn’t have seen or 2) not seen in a while or 3) didn’t realize he’s in the mood for, which are 4) hopefully on Delta: Zodiac? Once Upon a Time in Hollywood? Roofman? Jerry Maguire?
On the way out to the NBA All-Star Game in LA, Kiss ended up watching Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with Brad Pitt and Leo, which got a “👍🏿🔥🔥🔥” in return. And on the way back from LA, Kiss watched Roofman — where Channing Tatum stars as this good-hearted criminal who, in an attempt to escape the feds, ends up living in an operational Toys ‘R’ Us for months (months!) and attempting to carry on a normal life, which includes a romance with a church-going divorcé (played by Kirsten Dunst) and being stepdad of the century. Complicated situation! My review (which is also Kiss’ and Eric’s review)? Fun movie but IT IS FUCKING ASTONISHING THAT THIS IS A REAL STORY.
Anyway, I hope that this relationship continues, where Kiss keeps asking what he should watch and Eric has no idea what’s being shown. Eric is like Kramer’s Moviefone.
Last week, right after I sent out the newsletter, our interview with Angie Martinez dropped! Let me just say: Angie is so so so good at what she does. Like, the way she structures a conversation, the warmth she exudes, her smarts and humor…she’s the best. And I really do hope she comes through to make this 2J3BD1PRG thing happen. The invite is out! She might have to be on the sunny golf course less and in the direct path of Styles’ smoky haze, but I think it’ll be worth it.
As always, you can find us on YouTube, Spotify, Apple, Instagram, TikTok and right here, for our weekly newsletter. Also, here’s our merch shop!
And hey, hit the movie suggestion list — the latest write-ins were for Rounders (which I embarrassingly haven’t seen), Fast Times at Ridgemont High (great movie, great soundtrack) and Blood In, Blood Out which, hey, I just found the director’s cut on YouTube for free!
My next pick was put in by Brandon from San Antonio, TX, which I will be announcing next week. That’ll be for March 23.
Oh, and hit that pre-sale link! I would hate for non-ROTN fans to beat out the actual readers of the newsletter for good seats. And you know what happens when I get mad. 🔪🔪🔪
