2J3BD clip: The LOX on their OGs

And a lot of other announcements!

Before I talk about this clip from our latest episode, we’ve got some announcements: New show being announced next week in the newsletter next Thursday! New t-shirts going up for sale in two weeks! New pop-up at the top of next month! New episodes and newsletters every week!

In 1989, Eddie’s on top of the world, having gone on an unmatched run: jumping from saving SNL to 48 Hours, Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop(s I & II), Raw and Coming to America. There’s nowhere to go, being #1 is starting to feel easy.

Eddie goes balls to the wall, putting 100,000% into making his dream project: he does the writing, directing, producing, two of the three roles being ones he’s never done before. He puts together Harlem Nights, which is — more than anything — a concerted and celebrated effort to work with the comedy icons that inspired him: Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor and Della Reese.

This led Eric and me to ask The LOX, well, who were your Richard Pryors and Redd Foxxes? Who were the OGs that you were able to collaborate with early in your career? There was initially some confusion — blame the edibles; Biggie’s only 3 years older than The LOX — but where it ended up was interesting: working with Preemo, Pete Rock and Large Professor, and how each of The LOX like to work with producers. And it brought Eric and me back into familiar territory, talking music, which we haven’t done on mic in a while.

Check our Harlem Nights episode if you haven’t yet, here!

And — speaking of music talk, our next episode is Belly! I chose it because:

  • As Sheek mentioned, it’s Black History Month.

  • It’s one of our most-requested suggestions in our Google doc.

  • I didn’t think anyone else would choose it, probably because they thought it’d be like choosing Scarface or Paid in Full — a little too on-the-nose. Oh well! It’s a great episode.

So, a lot of music and music video talk in there. A lot of Tunnel talk in there, too.

Here’s the updated calendar for the next month, so you can get ahead:

Feb. 16: Belly (Jeff’s pick) — available on Amazon Prime.

Feb. 23: Django Unchained (Styles) — on Hulu or Paramount+ or free on Fubo.

March 2: All The President’s Men (Eric) — free on Pluto.

March 9: Cape Fear (Sheek) — on Amazon Prime or free on YouTube with ads.

Over on the paid side of the newsletter, we’ve got the full version of the story about Eric and me getting grabbed up at the club AND our interview with Taylor Rooks comes out (finally) Monday, followed by Lenny S. the following week. People have loved the Bun B and Mox interviews so far, so, let’s keep it going!

2J3BD is always a free service but if you want to show your support, we’ve got you. Weekly interviews and extra content for $8/month.

Shouts to everyone who has been showing love when Eric and I pop out. I ended up in the ER this week for something that ended up not being an emergency, but — while lying on a stretcher — this hospital employee came over, dapped me up and told me he loves the showcast. Also, I want to shout out all the drivers and delivery men and women who listen while in their vehicles, and everyone who says we make their days go by faster at work. Appreciate you all!

I think that’s it for this week. Eric and I are about to head over to CostCo. Keep sending in movie suggestions on the movie suggestion list — it’s because of you that we got Jada to pick Harlem Nights and me to pick Belly.

The latest send-ins are: Disorderlies (the legendary Fat Boys’ movie), Blindspotting (which…I remember seeing the trailers but I don’t remember thinking it was a comedy?) and City of God — which I was really pushing on Kiss, but he obviously went to Harlem with it. One day!

Also, since you made it this far, here’s what the group chat was saying last night:

As always, you can find us on YouTube, Spotify, Apple, Instagram, TikTok and right here, for our weekly newsletter. Also, here’s our merch shop!

Have a good week, the world needs more good weeks.
